reserve SANGiovese 2005
Traditional Italian varieties have grown in acceptance in the Australian market. Although not trying to copy the great wines of Italy, we have strived to make great Australian wines. Our winemaker, John Horden, has been experimenting with Sangiovese from the Hunter valley for a few vintages, and in 2005, we believe we are hitting the right notes. Although exhibiting the traditional spiciness and acidity of Italian wines, we have balanced this with the upfront fruit and varietal flavour that Australia is so famous for.
Tasting Note
The colour has a vibrant cherry garnet with a palate that will seduce you with its complex and savoury characters. It is well structured with firm tannins and a long lingering aftertaste, with hints of plum and cherry.
Technical Information
The fruit was harvested from our members’ vineyards during March. Fermentation took place in potter stainless steel tanks where the juice was pumped over to help the extraction of colour and tannins. A large portion of the wine was transferred to 1-3 year old American barriques for malo lactic fermentation and maturation for 12 months.
Serving Suggestion
This is a wine that demands food and in our opinion is best served with a plate of antipasto on a lazy afternoon.
